Scenic Shropshire & the Welsh Marches
Monday 23rd July 2012 ~ 5 Days, Staying at the Park Inn Telford £329
Shropshire lies or the border of England and Wales and set on a backdrop of patchwork fields, wooded valleys, picturesque rivers and rolling hills leading to the Welsh Marches. The heartland of the Industrial Revolution with pioneering engineering projects, steam trains and factories, today offers the opportunity to experience the heritage of both Georgian and Victorian eras in magnificent countryside which nature has peacefully reclaimed. From our stunning base, we ‘step back in time’ and catch a glimpse of England and Wales in times gone by. We join the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway for a steam train ride. Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service and welcome change from the rush of everyday life. We also board a boat for a lovely cruise on the beautiful River Severn from the historic town of Ironbridge. We also visit Stokesay Castle which is quite simply the finest and best preserved fortified medieval manor house in England. Set in peaceful countryside near the Welsh border, the castle, timber-framed gatehouse and parish church form an unforgettably picturesque group.
This tour is based in Telford at the Park Inn which is within walking distance of Telford town centre. All rooms are en suite with TV, cable channels, 24 hour room service, trouser press, hair dryer, telephone, tea and coffee provisions and access to the hotels fitness centre.

After breakfast this morning, join the coach as we travel the Wenlock Edge to Stokesay Castle, one of Britain’s earliest Manor houses. Set in peaceful countryside, the castle, together with its timber framed gatehouse and parish church create a quite beautiful scene. We then head on to Ludlow, described by John Betjamin as ‘the loveliest town in England’. Return to the hotel for our evening meal.
Today we visit Shrewsbury, arguably the finest Tudor town in England, with its many half-timbered buildings, Abbey, Castle and Medieval Church. In the afternoon our journey takes us across the border into Wales for a steam train journey on the Welshpool & Llanfair light railway.
In the morning we visit Wroxeter Roman City, once the 4th largest Roman City in England, from here we head over to Much Wenlock, a rustic 700 year old medieval market town with traditional black & white buildings and the remains of a 12th century Priory. We then enjoy a unique 45 minute river cruise with commentary, along the River Severn and under the famous Iron Bridge, a fine finale to your Shropshire tour. Return to the hotel for evening dinner.
