Scenic Shropshire & the Welsh Marches

Monday 23rd July 2012 ~ 5 Days, Staying at the Park Inn Telford  £329

Shropshire lies or the border of England and Wales and set on a backdrop of patchwork fields, wooded valleys, picturesque rivers and rolling hills leading to the Welsh Marches. The heartland of the Industrial Revolution with pioneering engineering projects, steam trains and factories, today offers the opportunity to experience the heritage of both Georgian and Victorian eras in magnificent countryside which nature has peacefully reclaimed. From our stunning base, we ‘step back in time’ and catch a glimpse of England and Wales in times gone by. We join the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway for a steam train ride. Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion,  this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service and welcome change from the rush of everyday life. We also board a boat for a lovely cruise on the beautiful River Severn from the historic town of Ironbridge. We also visit Stokesay Castle which is quite simply the finest and best preserved fortified medieval manor house in England. Set in peaceful countryside near the Welsh border, the castle, timber-framed gatehouse and parish church form an unforgettably picturesque group.
