Versailles & Gardens of Paris

Staying at the Novotel Chateau de Maffliers

Friday 20th April 2012 ~ 4 Days  – £369

This tour is based at the 3 star superior Novotel Château de Maffliers. Located in green surroundings, just to the north of Paris, this hotel is stylish and charming. In addition to time in Paris we include visits to Versailles Palace, Château Vaux le Vicomte and gardens and to Monet’s Garden at Giverny, Monet’s garden has been lovingly restored and here is where the painter lived until his death in 1929. The colours of the flower garden and water garden were the inspiration for some of his most famous works.

Versailles is home to the simply exquisite palace and gardens created by King Louis XIV in the 17th century. No expense was spared in the creation of the sumptuously decorated palace, best known for its hall of mirrors, which was previously used for lavish celebrations. The 800-hectare gardens, one of France’s most visited attractions and a World Heritage Site, contain meticulously manicured lawns, colourful flowerbeds and masterfully sculptured statues and fountains. In the early seventeenth century, between the royal residences of Vincennes and Fontainebleau, a small castle stood at the confluence of two small rivers. The domain was called Vaux-le-Vicomte, it was then just a place on the map and its reputation had still to be made. In 1641 a 26 year-old parliamentarian, Nicolas Fouquet, purchased the estate. Fifteen years later the first stone of a unique masterpiece was laid, it was to be the finest château and garden in France.
